INSTRUCTIONS_
PROJECT 1 & 2_
Week 0321 Jan 2020
For project 1 we are to choose a recipe of our choice and make an A3 infographic poster for the recipe of our choice. We used the time in class to decide on our recipe, and it is important that our poster have a clear narrative. After some careful considerations, I have chosen one of my favourite dish which is the Hong Kong style cheese baked rice. And after deciding on the dish I began to look up for specific recipes online. For this dish, there is a small variety of sauces and meat choices. I stumbled on this video on YouTube that used seafood and white sauce.
And so I decided to follow this recipe and found a link in the description to their reddit post for the written recipe. Here is the link to the reddit post.

No class today due to upcoming Chinese New Year. I gathered some example of infographic posters before sketching. I looked at posters that has a lot of information as my recipe requires quite a lot of steps. Here are some examples that inspired me.

I did some sketches during the break, and asked them for approval from Ms Anis before continuing.
I decided to go with a isometric layout as it looked more interesting, and instead of having detailed levels/floors, I made a big block and each level of the block is the process. Making it look like a block of machine or kitchen appliance. After getting feedback from Ms Anis, I proceeded digitise the poster as I didn't want to waste time because my laptop died in the worst timing :(((

There's no tutorial class today but I've had chances of working on the poster, finished the ingredients today.

Week 06
11 Feb 2020
No class as we are told to focus on completing the projects. My laptop is fixed so I was able to get to work on the poster.
14 Feb 2020
There's also no class tutorial class today for us to focus on our projects.

After having majority of the poster done, I looked into Chinese fonts on Google Fonts to use. There wasn't a lot of choices, but the one I chose is fitting in my opinion.

Fig. 1.23: screenshot of the font I used, ZCOOL XianWei from Google Fonts |
The Chinese font don't have the character ç„—, so I typed it out as separate characters as seen above in Fig. 1.24, and adjusted both the characters to make up the missing character that I need.
Here is the first draft of the poster.
I felt that the pastel colour scheme wasn't matching the vibe of Hong Kong so I decided to change it into a night scene with neon sign boards.
Week 07

I looked at some neon sign boards online before beginning on them.

Week 04
28 Jan 2020
Feedback on my sketches for the poster is that its clear to see that I have already chunked my process so its good. Since it is read from bottom to top, experiment with colours and tones, maybe have lighter colours on the bottom or put the title at the bottom to lock the readers' eyes to the bottom first.

Presentation feedback, Mr Kannan and Ms Anis mentioned that our group has been consistent with presenting all semester and hope that we can continue this in the future. Mr Kannan said to reapply what we've learned from design principle to this and to future works too. And while presenting, body language is important, it might put off audiences if done wrongly. The key is to keep engaging with the audience, and we should carry these skills to the future. He also reminded us of the several competitions coming up, the purpose for us to participate is to state that we exist in this industry. And we are gaining the experience and exposure, we should use the platform that we're given to us right now. As Mr Kannan said, just participate you have nothing to lose.

REFLECTION_
EXPERIENCES
Week 03
Excited to start this project as we are able to chose what ever recipe we want too create and the style of poster too. I got to chose one of the food that I like and thought it would be fun to learn about the steps that go into creating the dish.
Week 04
As Chinese New Year is approaching, my laptop decided it was a good time to break down and prevent me from starting to digitise my sketch during the break. This resulted in a lot of stress as it will take a long time for it to be fixed and also thinking about the deadline with the Intercultural trip in mind. That's why I decided to start digitising and get whatever I can done on the campus IMacs before the trip.
Week 05
No progress, Intercultural Design trip.
Week 06
As we came back from the trip, most of us are jet lagged. And I was not motivated to resume into work mode. But at least my laptop was fixed while I was away at the trip. It was really overwhelming to be back without touching this project for 1 week with the deadline so close. Thankfully the lecturers extended the deadline for us so it was more manageable for us to balance both module projects.
Week 07
It's the last week of class, had a wonderful semester in this module. It wasn't foreign at all compared to going into other subjects. It helped me learned more about how information is visualised and presented and their purpose. Also while presenting Mr Kannan mimicked my hand movements and I caught a glimpse of it and reminded me of how he asked if I break dacne during the start of semester.
OBSERVATIONS
Week 03
Asking around the class, some of my classmates are doing a simpler recipe while others chose more complicated/recipes that requires more steps.
Week 04
I was stressing and panicking about the poster as my laptop broke down, while others are still in the sketching stage.
Week 05
No progress, Intercultural Design trip.
Week 06
My motivation went down a lot after coming back from the trip, and completing this poster and its progress is slow.
Week 07
As I was animating in After Effects, I realised that masking is different from other programs and I had to also set a mask path for it to not move with the main object which is a bit frustrating and it warped some of my objects a bit.
FINDINGS
Week 03
It was interesting to see how different everyone's approach to this project with their ideas.
Week 04
Due to it being a short semester with a lot of work load added on with my laptop break down, I was stressing out a lot during the Chinese New Year break as I was unable to work on all of my projects across both modules.

Week 05
No progress, Intercultural Design trip.
Week 06
Turns out I am a bit ahead of some of my classmates as they are still at the beginning of the poster which to be honest with the announcement of the deadline pushed back, I was not as motivated as before the trip. And a part of that would also be because I went a week without my laptop which I couldn't even update my blog, my productiveness has also went down.
Week 07
Progress was slow but I finished, I would not say its the best, looking at my classmates posters makes me question my own especially if it is also in isometric style. But I've learned that I should be confident at presenting my own work even if its not the best.
