LECTURES_
Lecture 01 _
7 Jan 2020 (week 01)
Mr Shamsul is handling our final project which is an animated infographic video.

By using the questions what, why, where, when, who and how, we can start building our narrative.

10 Jan 2020
Mr Shamsul mentioned to use what we have researched and transform the data/information into a narrative/story line. The story line can be separated into scenes, 5 scenes should be enough. It is advised not to visualise the infographic while thinking of the story line.

FINAL PROJECT_

Week 01
7 Jan 2020
Final Project
We are to execute this project in a group, our group consists of Jason, Daryl, Angie and me. We had to draw a topic and we got "Men vs Women". We first listed down topics that relates to Men vs Women.

-Difference in the workforce
-Mental health
-Fashion
-Skincare/costemics

We wanted to go with fashion, we did a bit of searching on the internet. And when Mr Shamsul gave us the feedback, we decided to change it to skincare/cosmetics. And we tried to look for information on these points:

Current Ideas:
Cosmetics/Skin care
Title- “Men vs Women, cosmetics”
-Comparison between gendered brands
    -differences in ingredients
    -differences in packaging
-How often do men/women use skincare?
-Differences in men and women’s skin
-Makeup
Target audience- Young adults

I looked looked for information on makeup, by looking at the history and why has makeup died off for men and now highly targeted towards women. Below are the websites and information that I've gathered.

10 Jan 2020
We have to write the narration in today's class, and try to complete it in class. So that we can test out our story line with each other to see if the audience are interested and to get feedback. We are a bit stuck as we have not fully committed on a specific thing to talk about as the sub topics that we listed are too much for the video. We discussed and settled on plastic surgery which Daryl did some research on with some statistics. We only manage to finish intro and scene 1 in class, the feedback from our classmates were fine. Below is the completed narrative.

We also have to compile a mood board consisting of the typeface that we're going to use, colours, art style and at least 2 transition style. And have the mood board and narrative done by next week.

Week 02
17 Jan 2020
We presented our mood board to the class today, this is the slides.

After the presentation, we moved onto drawing the storyboard.

Angie recorded the narration through the weekend, with the original script it was 4 minutes. So we decided to cut some parts out to make it shorter.

Week 03
21 Jan 2020
We have done a rough story board and showed it to Mr Shamsul. After the feedback given, we segregated parts of the storyboard to be refined by all of us. Mr Shamsul said the storyboard has to include the narration, duration, visual effects and sound effects below every frame.

After class, taking in account of all the points to include in the storyboard, this is my part.

No class

Week 04
28 Jan 2020
Mr Shamsul reviewed our storyboard today. Since it was drew by all of us, there wasn't a consistent style. So following Mr Shamsul's feedbacks, here is the final refined storyboard. Mr Shamsul also uploaded a text effects tutorial on Google classroom which might be useful for our final project.

31 Jan 2020
We presented our animatics today, here is the animatics.

After this, we started on drawing the assets for the intro.

Week 05
4 Feb 2020
No class, Intercultural Design trip. Updated Mr Shamsul on the intro assets.

7 Feb 2020
No class, Intercultural Design trip.

Week 06
11 Feb 2020
No class, continue working on the assets, we have segregated the tasks, Daryl is in charge on the characters assets, Angie is in charge of the background, I will be handling sound effects and Jason will be animating.

14 Feb 2020
No class, continued on the assets and looking for sound effects.

Week 07
18 Feb 2020
No class, Daryl has finished the assets, and I helped to do the strips of bar chart and timeline for her.

21 Feb 2020
No class, I have compiled the list of sound effects we need. And all of the assets and backgrounds are done a few days ago.

Jason did the intro, as seen in below. And we gave him feedback to improve on the animation, which has a lot of work to be improved.

Week 08
25 Feb 2020
Waiting for Jason to finish animating.

28 Feb 2020
While waiting I looked at infographic videos again but to observe the sound effects and background music, I noticed that narration is the loudest, background music is soft and there usually little to none sound effects. After Jason is done with animating, I got to work on the audio.

After completing the audio and sound effects, the final animation is 3 mins 04 seconds without end credit. I offered to do the end credit and I utilised what Mr Shamsul taught on his tutorial on tracking text effect and also searched up on YouTube.

Fig. 1.18: adding a bounce text effect

I used a bounce effect on the thank you note, and using the tracking effect for our names. Below is the final infographic animation on our theme "Men vs Women" and our topic "Men vs Women: Plastic Surgery in Asia".

FEEDBACK_

Week 01
7 Jan 2020
Mr Shamsul said to avoid popular topics like salary, fashion etc.

10 Jan 2020
Mr Shamsul took a look at our intro and scene 1 and suggested us to use a timeline in scene 1 were there is a jump in time. He also mentioned to everyone to finish the narration by this week so he can check it.

Week 02
14 Jan 2020
no feedback

17 Jan 2020
Mr Shamsul asked us if we are going to do a spilt screen for the information mentioning men and women data, we are planning to do that. The mood board is fine, do the storyboard.

Week 03
21 Jan 2020
Feedback on storyboard, Mr Shamsul said finalise the drawings because its too rough for him to understand. For frame 8 when stopping on the timeline, add a bounce to it. Research on the tattoos of 1800 and such. Add a timeline to WW1, and complete the storyboard for this Friday.

24 Jan 2020
no feedback

Week 04
28 Jan 2020
Feedback on storyboard, we need to put the duration and sound effects in. The intro scene duration is quite long, our final video could be more than 3 mins which is a bit too much, since our recording is already to 2 mins 40 seconds. Although credits is not included in the 3 mins. Mr Shamsul said someone needs to control the art directions, there's no one kind of style. For statistics, only use one kind of bar chart, don't use vertical ones then switch to horizontal ones. Storyboard is rough maybe need more detailed drawings for the animatics. Mr Shamsul commented that the use of the Korean flag turning into a pie chart is good.

31 Jan 2020
Animatics feedback, for the poster/ad scene, instead of that we can have several women but have 1 that has plastic surgery stand out. Asia just include the continent map, and label the bar chart. The ending scene is too long, voice over is not very good, the volume is too low.

Week 05
4 Feb 2020
Asked Mr Shamsul through Facebook, and said that our intro assets seems good to go.

REFLECTION_

EXPERIENCES
Week 01
After learning that this final project will be carried out right away was a bit of a shock but its nothing new. My group chose me as the leader, which I'm not confident about but I will try to do my best by looking over members and encourage more discussions.

Week 02
So far its going good, things that needs to be done is completed. Hope we will work as efficiently further down the weeks.

Week 03
While doing the storyboard, I did what Mr Shamsul mentioned which was to write the narration, duration, visual affect and sound affects. But I noticed that there's some members who didn't do it, or forgot to do it which is a bit frustrating.

Week 04
Although we completed the assets for the intro, I felt bad as I couldn't help to do because my laptop was broken and I have no other way to draw the assets. But I was Skyping Daryl and gave feedback when she needed while she was doing the assets.

Week 05
No progress, Intercultural Design trip.

Week 06
Since this is the week after coming back from the trip, we are still pretty jet lagged plus having other of the projects piling up with 1 week without our laptop to even update the blog is pretty stressful. But as mentioned some deadlines were pushed back which I appreciate.

Week 07
By this week, there's just so much things to be done for both the modules. And due to that, the animation isn't halfway done yet which I am very nervous for as I need to do the sound effects and I'm scared that I won't have enough time by the time Jason finishes the animation.
OBSERVATIONS
Week 01
In my opinion it was a bit hard to discuss with the whole group as no one is really leading an idea.

Week 02
We usually just assign our work and work on it on our own.

Week 03
I wasn't that demanding in what needed to be done which I think is the downside of me leading this group. Because at the same time I didn't want to come off arrogant.

Week 04
Having my laptop be broken during the middle of the semester wasn't fun, but I made myself a bit useful by giving feedback and suggestions.

Week 05
No progress, Intercultural Design trip.

Week 06
We are all more focused on the Intercultural design project as that needed a presentation really soon.

Week 07
By this week my sleeping schedule is all messed up and this project isn't halfway done yet which stressed me out a lot.
FINDINGS
Week 01
We did prioritise other projects first as there where a lot of things going on at the same time, as a result we aren't that prepared to write the narration and failed to complete during class.

Week 02
It is seen that I will need to push more for our group to check in at all times for progress.

Week 03
Our group doesn't have a distinct person that is very "pushy" (in a good way) which is a problem when it comes to getting stuff done on time.

Week 04
Relived that Mr Shamsul is fine with what we have now since our art style isn't usual for inforgraphic like vector art is.

Week 05
No progress, Intercultural Design trip.

Week 06
My own motivation has went down partly due to jet lag and also going a week without my laptop, which I know its going to affect my projects but I will try my best to get things done when I have to.

Week 07
I noticed that if I don't ask for process and update on the animation, our group chat is mostly an abandoned place since it was left with animating and sound effect. Tried to meet this week Friday, I initiated the meeting before the class was cancelled. But after the class was canceled, all of us came accept a member couldn't make it. I wanted to meet on campus to work solely on this project as it is a designated time set aside for this project.
