Morphing
-geometric shapes/create unique atmosphere
-complex morphing using symbols to change the typography

Accelerated typography animation
-dazzling visual effect

Storytelling
-complement a narrative (like a lyric music video)

Environmental typography
-employs architectural elements such as colours, patterns, materials, images, themes
-using everyday objects to make up the typography

3D typography
-software used:maya, cinema 4D, illustrator and photoshop
-extra depth, not created for readibility

Collateral 2: T-shirt
For the t-shirt design, I watched some videos on designing for shirts and the correct file so use. I started out with sketching the the designs.

Final for collateral 1, 2 & 3.
Here's the flat lay. My design/key artwork is made up of different aspects of a troublemaker. The eye with a globe means vision for the future of our world, the flags means celebration or it could mean their resistance, and last but not least the ripples is caused by their impact. The colour that I chose is turquoise, first it was to avoid using red since it was overused, second it was because I wanted a calmer colour as Mr Vinod mentioned troublemakers might not necessarily caused "trouble" in the conventional way.

FEEDBACK_

Week 07
General feedback
Make sure the blog is updated. For the exercise, must have outline around the artwork, exercise 1 have to be in spreads. PDF must be public and in spreads too. Ensure that everything is visible. For exercise 2 part 1, letters have to be placed in a baseline on one art board. Mr Vinod mentioned that we have to work hard as in the past, some seniors are still working on their Project 1 at the start of Project 2. Take a look at Shigeo Fukuda's work.

Specific feedback

Feedback sheet - Please make the finding type exercise on one baseline without the artboard separation.

Project 1 - Mr Vinod was hoping that I would ditch the idea and come up with something new after his feedback for me on Facebook. He said to look at Fukuda's work and see what I would come up with. While checking my blog, Mr Vinod called me up and said that my exercise 1 is good and that I should reflect this on my Project 2. He mentioned that based on my exercise he guess that I can do my layout right quite quickly so I have to sort out my key artwork first. After asking him about the mock up that I did at the end of the class, he said the doesn't get the effect that is done on the person and its too complicated and that there are still elements from the previous version. I should completely forget about the previous idea/version, come up with a simpler design refer to his examples and feedback on Facebook. And the showed me soviet badges as an example. I asked Mr Vinod about my new idea mock up and this was the feedback that was given "Better. Improve the flag composition" After improving the flag, I also asked Mr Vinod about my new mock up and this was the feedback given (new mock up) "Very interesting. Maybe the thickening of the lines may be necessar. The lines need to be more controlled. Presently it’s intuitive but lacks control and needs to have more consistency. You can also look at Shigeo Fukuda’s key artworks which are made up of lines. That could be a bench mark for your lines." (improved flag composition) "This is also nice. But just increase the line thickness. Also try to avoid making the human look like a man/woman. You’re almost done. Keep at it!"

Week 08
General feedback
Mr Vinod reminds us that its important that we work on the right document size which is A2, because if the poster is on A3 and printed on A2, the texts all will be enlarged. Mr Vinod said that in advertising, the idea is wittier, more pronounced, while what we're doing, graphic design, isn't go pronounced and the idea is meshed in with the design. While in entertainment design/concept art, idea is created and influenced by the story line

Specific feedback
Project 1 - Idea 2, the triangles are not in the same graphic style as the eye. The typeface used (which has some part cut off) implements other meanings because of how it looks. Idea 1, this is better than the Idea 2 since it looks more like a key artwork. Keep the point size within the range they mentioned.

Project 2 mock up posters - Idea 2, they liked the dilatational system poster and they can see the layout used in my mock ups. Idea 1, the "open public lectures:" and the "november 8, 2019" spoiled the key artwork, not as good. But Mr Vinod said it is probably because I haven't expanded on the layout yet. After doing more designs, I asked Mr Vinod at the end of the class for feedback. He said that its not there yet, like the second one, centralist the key artwork, have a tighter letter spacing and smaller point size. All need to be same point size, differentiate it with bold, colour etc. you have a lot of angles to play with, utilise those. Feedback for 2nd stage of designs, Mr Shamsul saw it first and said none of them are working as they're not align to anything but he said to ask Mr Vinod. Mr Vinod said to break the time and name and have paragraph spacing to have a longer block of text and change the point size to be even smaller. He advised to focus and place one element at a time first, then look at the space and decide where to put the other elements. Like the date, he understands that I'm trying to put emphasis on the 8 but its not working because its causing ragging. I sent my 3rd stage designs to Mr Vinod on Facebook, this was the feedback "Resolve that. (insert image) It needs to be subtle like these (blue arrow). Yes." And after doing the refinement, I got a thumbs up from Mr Vinod on Facebook. After showing Mr Vinod my t-shirt designs on Facebook, he said "This looks quite cool" to my lines design on the front of the shirt (design 2).

Week 09
General feedback
We can photo manipulate our photos in Photoshop but it has to be done in Illustrator afterwards. Keep in min communication at all time when breaking the key artwork up, and advised to print the poster out on A3 B&W first to see if further adjustments are needed. We need to think hard about our final project as it will require our absolute focus.

Specific feedback
Poster looks fine, for t-shirt use design 1 back and design 2 front. As for the tote bag, use design 3 and apply the lines on the other side of the tote bag. After showing the printed poster, I was told to adjust the spacing between each word in the vertical orientation. After showing the printed fixed spacing, its done.

REFLECTION_

EXPERIENCES
Week 07
Had to think a lot for Project 1 since I couldn't get it right multiple times and had to learn to let go of fond ideas if it gets rejected. But I wasn't annoyed about the times that keep changing because I know I am getting closer to the end result each step/rejection.

Week 08
This week spent a lot of time on the poster design as I started late because of Project 1, because of this, it made it hard for me to balance out my assignments from other modules. But this also makes me motivated to complete it as soon as possible and work on it everyday.

Week 09
For the collateral, I did several versions of designs so I have something ready to show in class. I was glad that my designs worked and I didn't have to produce more designs for the t-shirt and tote bag but just finalise it. But me and some classmates had to leave class at lunch to sort out an MPU module project that required us to visit a school, it was the first time I missed a part of class this semester.

Week 10
Everything went well and the designs were set. While printing the collateral I did not realise that there might be a possibility that not the same tote bag will be given to me compared to my mock up. That is why the printed tote bag back side isn't full width like I would like it to be. The t-shirt it was due to my own mistake that I printed the wrong back design. but another problem I ran into is with the poster. I printed it but the colour was too green, went to reprint and the colour was correct but somehow all the things that is black got smudged. I didn't notice it because it was rolled up when handed to me. So I submitted the first printed poster although I don't like how the colour turned out.
OBSERVATIONS
Week 07
There was a few of us in the class including me who aren't completely done with our Project 1.

Week 08
When Mr Vinod said they're are going to check the blog on Project 1, a lot of people in the class freaked out and panicked. I walked around the class quite frequently.

Week 09
It was interesting to see how my classmates design their collateral from their key artwork, but some struggled to think of ways to design and get approval from the lecturers. When we arrived back to class after the visiting of school, I was surprised to see most classmates are still in class even though class has already ended.

Week 10
We were only told to print out collateral this week so we had to work fast and find a place to print.
FINDINGS
Week 07
For myself I realised that I tend to make complicated artworks that are quite hard to decipher, they are not straightforward enough for this project. As for the others I think some of them don't get the idea even after feedback and it just confused them further.

Week 08
This is because of some of them aren't finished with updating their blog or they haven't started the blog for Project 1, and they missed their lunch break just to do the blog for checking. I already done updating my blog the day before and only left with the final key artwork's PDF to update so I was pretty fine. I do try to help my friends and give them feedback or suggestions when I walk around to have a look at their work.

Week 09
It was good talking to some classmates and offer them my opinion when they asked me about their design. I try to lend my ears and if I do have suggestions I tell them, but I do find that I should be asking more questions to my friends and classmates when I'm stuck because they might be able to help me spark some idea like I did to them.

Week 10
I panicked a bit as I found that most places don't print on black as they don't have white ink. And also couldn't find places that sold plan tote bag even though my classmates told us that Muji should sell them, we went to the store but they didn't have the plain one. Another problem was my classmates that wanted to print on black tote bag had to find a way to quickly acquire the tote bag as most places don't sell black tote bag.

Tazugane Gathic: a Japanese typeface with the elegance of a crane

Fig. 6.1: website page

Link to the article: https://www.monotype.com/resources/font-stories/tazugane-gothic-a-japanese-typeface-with-the-elegance-of-a-crane/
The typeface developed from the problem that the Japanese characters and Latin characters not looking good and harmonious together. Its interesting to see how a problem is solved in the sense of having another language's typeface and matching it as they have different characteristics. The sans serif typeface - Neue Frutiger is used as a baseline for the Tazugane Gothic Latin alphabets, it is adjusted to have the right balance when placed with Japanese characters and consider the proportion of the spacing and the white space to convey the correct characteristics.

Week 08
Can "Bad" Type Design Help Readers Absorb and Remember Information? by Angela Riechers

Fig. 6.2: website page

Link to the article: https://eyeondesign.aiga.org/sans-forgetica-a-typeface-to-remember/
This article discusses Sans Forgetica and its effect. The type is readable but it requires more time to figure out as the letters are not complete. The point is to make the reader to focus and pay more attention to read and thus making the memory trace stronger. This is a good and interesting way to increase the memory trace but as the article mentioned, in the long term, will the brain adapt to the type and its oddness and be able to read it faster. So it means there might be a possibility that the brain will get use to the type and the point of helping people remember texts might not be fulfilled in the scenario of long term. However this is an interesting article to read and I liked how the font name is Sans Forgetica which directly relates to the memory trace point that the designers are trying to convey.
