Final Project 

Week 12
We were briefed by Mr Hafiz for this final project, we are to create a triptych based on one of 5 songs given. They are ‘Fly me to the moon’, ‘The way you look tonight’, ‘Come fly with me’, ‘Girl from Ipanema’ and ‘New York, New York’ by Frank Sinatra. After giving it some thoughts, multiple listens and reading the lyrics to each songs, I chose to illustrate ‘Fly me to the moon’. We are asked again to create a google slides for this project. So here are the mood board, colour board and concept board I’ve done.

To start off I looked for photos that are an imagery in the lyrics of the song, and the art style that I wish to accomplish.

Then it is the colour board, I wanted to create a warm and other-worldly effect with the colours that’s why I chose to work in monochrome purple. It is also a challenge I set for myself to work in a limited palette yet again.

Next is the concept board, there’s the initial triptych sketch that I did.

Moving on, here’s the analysis of the song ‘Fly me to the moon’

Week 13
We went into class to get some feedback for our sketches. Mr Hafiz said that the 2nd sketch was fine and that I did not need to improve when he saw me sketching more things on my sketch book.

But the improved sketch was also fine and after consulting Mr Redzwan this is what happened

And after asking Mr Hafiz about the improved sketches, he said the angles look good and I can move on to digitising them.

I used the rule of third when I placed my sketches into photoshop just to improve the composition according to the size of the canvas.

For the 1st artboard, the flower petals seems stiff so I changed it flow pattern to a more dynamic movement.

Week 14
Today in class we showed Mr Hafiz our progress. And I did a mock up of the colours

After getting approval from Mr Hafiz, I started the digital painting process. I have watched YouTube videos on how to start with digital painting since I this will be my first time painting digitally. I mainly lay the base colour down flat, shade with a texture (like charcoal on paper texture) roughly then blend with a mixer brush tool and a brush that's made up of different sized circles.

For the liquid on the 1st art board, I used a screen blending mode to make it a bit transparent along with lowering the opacity of the layer.

After that I moved onto creating the stars in the background and the glow coming off from the flower petals.

The final touch is the lyrics formed along the path of the flower petals, Mr Hafiz mentioned that we can include typography but it has to be illustrated typography. Meaning we can’t use existing typefaces. I asked if handwriting was allowed, and it is so I just wrote out the lyrics by hand so they’re my hand writing. I did some variations with the blending mode to see which is suitable and compliments the overall colour scheme.

Animating the GIF

Week 15

Lastly we are to create an limited animation for this triptych. I did a test animation just to see if all the art boards will appear together in 1 animation since I created my triptych in 3 art boards in the same file.

So for the 1st art board I will be making the liquid seems like its flowing. To do that I just drew another flowing liquid that has a slight difference.

The second art board I made the moon rotate. And for the last art board I made the ends of her hair move by using puppet warp.

Here’s the 1st try on the animation, the 1st and last art board is fine, but the 2nd art board isn’t really up to my expectation. So I changed it to moving to and away from the palm of the hand (total of 2 frames on loop)

After asking a friend for comment on the animation, I took the feedback and added 2 more frames so that the moon moves a bit smoother. I end with 4 frames in total and on loop, here’s the final limited animation:
